Founded in 1989 by the ballerina Alicia Alonso, its general director, it is a tribute to one of the components making up Cuban nationality. Both in its more traditional elements as in its more contemporary manifestations, the wealth of Spanish culture alternates with other manifestations that although they are definitely Cuban reveal the undeniable imprint of the Iberian Peninsula. Cuban and Spanish solo artists, theater companies, dance groups and musical groups will be performing in Havana theaters and at facilities in the most ancient areas of the city such as the Plaza de Armas and the Castillo de la Real Fuerza, tangible and permanent witnesses to the Spanish presence in the city.
