  • Cuba Absolutely Review: December 2012

La Cocina de Lilliam is set in the gardens of a beautiful villa in Miramar. This is right at the top of the list of many visitors’ dream list. It is easy to see why with the romantic, artfully lit garden full of greenery and splashing fountains many miles away from the typical Cuban dining experience. Indeed, after President Jimmy Carter’s visit here on May 13, 2002, this place started to promote itself with the slogan “Feel like the president for a night.”

The food is excellent with a range of international dishes presented in an attractive manner, Try the chickpea, ham, and onion appetizer, and then opt for a piece of fresh fish, usually grouper or snapper, simply grilled. The menu varies, but if it’s available, order Ropa vieja, made with shredded lamb here instead of the traditional beef.

For all of that I have never really liked the place, I can’t really put my finger on why not. I’m not wild about having to have the bell rung to get in like a supplicant at the castle, the service always seems a little reluctant, they will bring you your food but not so keen to go the extra mile. It is definitely expensive and while the food is good, personally I would rather buy flowers than pay extra to have my food adorned with them. And why is it closed on Saturday? Better things to do?

Arrogance at La Cocina de Liliam

It is a pity that such a beautiful paladar can be ruined by the arrogant attitude of the staff who act as if the world is not worthy of them. This was the place that Jimmy Carter came back in 2001 and before the new wave of paladares opened, this was one of the few class acts in town. Although the Havana dining scene has now changed, they seem not to have got the memo.

Friends of mine were recently asked never to come back here after an argument with the waiter who refused to serve them more bread at 11 p.m. Go figure. I don’t care if the rich and famous come here, I still believe even little old me is always right – I am the customer after all.
