  • This hotel, which opened in 1952, was formerly a school for art instructors and was later used by the central committee of the Communist Party as its headquarters. Today, it is an attractively designed Cubanacán hotel with a choice of rooms in the main building or bungalows in the hotel gardens, some with their own kitchen. The hotel also has facilities for scuba diving and will take qualified divers out to the nearest coral reefs. Alternatively, you could go for a dip in one of the nine swimming pools on site. Home to one of Havana’s best shopping complexes.

Try and book one of the ‘Alborada’ bungalows, which were completely renovated in late 2005. The other Pleamar bungalows – though timeworn – already offer decent value. Bunched around the meandering free-form pool with lots of secret spaces for catching some rays, the bungalows earn bonus points for their big balconies, separate living room, eating area and kitchens equipped with everything but the oven.
