La Piazza succeeds enormously where most of the other hotel restaurants (including of the same Meliá Cohíba) struggle. It succeeds in providing good quality Italian food and fine service but most of all it succeeds because it has life, energy, and a buzz. This restaurant (next door to the Med) follows a simple formula, but it works well.
The décor is provided by extensive sports memorabilia, which you don’t notice at first but on closer inspection, is interesting and provides something to do if you get bored with your date! This is a large and comfortable place with big comfortable tables and a long sofa pegged to one side.
The pizza is excellent, definitely up there with the best in Cuba. It comes in two sizes, large and gigantic. Even pizzaholics would struggle with the gigantic although the thin crust nature of the beast makes it doable. A gigantic seafood pizza comes in at a hefty CUC 19.50 but is worth it and could be shared! The pastas are pretty good and come in a range of forms. There is also a good table with a small selection of hams, cheeses (including parmesan) available and recommended as a starter along with the garlic focaccia. This is particularly popular on a Sunday night where you may need to watch out for screaming children. Other than that, you can relax and enjoy.
