Malecón entre Belascoaín (Padre Valera) y Jovellar
  • Dominating the Malecón to the west, at the foot of Belascoaín (Avenida Padre Varela), is the massive bronze monument to Antonio Maceo, on top of a marble base in a plaza with a fountain. The classical monument was erected in 1916 in honor of the mulatto general and hero of the Wars of Independence who was known as the ‘Bronze Titan.’ Maceo survived 24 bullet wounds before he was killed in action in 1896. The park is located on what in colonial times was the site of a military fortress, the Queen’s artillery battery and the small San Lázaro Cove.

Restored in 2007 Parque Maceo, has new fountains and benches, plus lush Chinese grass – although it still lacks shade trees.
