This is one of the four buildings around the Obelisk in Marianao. This school is the oldest fine arts school in Latin America and the second oldest school in Cuba, preceded only by the University. It was founded in 1818 at the Convent of San Alejandro by the French painter Jean Baptiste Vermay, who was its first director. The school was relocated in 1962 from its original site to this monumental building, built in the 1940s.
